Description from the seller
In its original state, an Art Deco wooden corner chair in the style of the Amsterdam School. This Dutch design movement is characterized by the combination of traditional craftsmanship with expressive, geometric forms and influences from Art Deco.
The chair is attributed to Jac Levee from Amsterdam, Netherlands, a renowned furniture designer and producer of Amsterdam School and Art Deco furniture. Made in the period circa 1920–1930.
The piece is in good antique condition, with normal signs of age and use, such as light dents and wear. Given its age, it is primarily decorative; heavy or intensive daily use is therefore not recommended. Nevertheless, it is a particularly attractive and authentic piece of furniture.
The seat is made of turned rope, presumably sea grass, with a cane underframe, visible in the detail photos. (top and underside photographed) The chair rests on four legs and features two nicely curved bentwood backrests.
Dimensions:
• Seat height: 37 cm
• Front width: 45 cm
• Depth: 45 cm
• Total height: 67.5 cm
A distinctive feature of this model is the curved armrests, where the continuous wood grain is visible in both the lower and upper sections. This testifies to solid craftsmanship. In combination with the black accents these original details give the chair a characterful and decorative appearance. The black rings or "closjes" on the legs are an iconic detail often seen on furniture by Jac. Levee. These details were often executed in black-stained wood, as is the case with this chair.
The use of sturdy oak wood combined with a traditional seat was popular at N.V. Jac. Levee's Groothandel in Meubelen from Amsterdam, because it gave both durability and a handmade, artisanal appearance.
The rear also shows careful shaping, so the chair does not have to be placed only in a corner, but can also stand freely and look at home.
The photos are part of the description. We recommend reviewing them carefully to get an accurate impression of condition, construction, and appearance. The chair will be carefully packed and insured when shipped.
