Description from the seller

E. Leitz Wetzlar — Drawing Ocular / Camera Lucida — 45° — 1960s — Original Case — Germany

E. Leitz Wetzlar — Drawing Ocular (Camera Lucida) — 45° — c.1960s

A rare and beautifully preserved drawing ocular (描画接眼レンズ) by Ernst Leitz Wetzlar, one of the most respected names in precision optical instruments. This accessory allows microscope users to project the observed image onto paper, enabling accurate hand-drawing of microscopic specimens — a technique of great importance in scientific illustration.

✦ ABOUT THIS INSTRUMENT
The Leitz drawing ocular works by using an internal prism to superimpose the microscope image onto the drawing surface beside the instrument. The user observes both the specimen and their hand simultaneously, tracing the image with a pencil. This technique, known as Camera Lucida, produces drawings of remarkable accuracy — superior in some respects to photography, as the artist can selectively emphasise structural detail.

Leitz introduced their first drawing apparatus in 1891. This eyepiece-type drawing device (catalogue No. 8443) dates to approximately the 1960s, identified by the "E. Leitz Wetzlar Germany" markings and the characteristic black anodised finish.
