ABOUT THE BOOK:
Originally photographed in the Calder Valley, West Yorkshire, between 1975 and 1980, The Non‑Conformists represents Martin Parr’s earliest sustained body of work and a foundational project within British documentary photography. The series records the rituals, interiors, and social life of nonconformist chapel communities at a moment of cultural transition and decline.

Published by Aperture in 2013, this edition brings renewed attention to Parr’s early black‑and‑white practice, characterised by close observation, formal restraint, and an acute sensitivity to social detail. While rooted in the British documentary tradition, the work already signals Parr’s emerging authorial voice and his sustained interest in class, community, and everyday life. Long regarded as a key work in the artist’s oeuvre, The Non‑Conformists stands as an important precursor to Parr’s later, more widely recognised colour photography.
