Enzo Mari was one of the giants of Italian design in the twentieth century, a complex figure who managed to unite design practice with deep theoretical and political reflection. Considered the “conscience of design,” Mari interpreted his work not as the creation of simple aesthetic objects, but as an act of social and civil responsibility aimed at improving the quality of daily life. His search for the essence of form led him to collaborate with historic companies like Danese, for which he created enduring icons such as the perpetual calendar Timor of 1967, inspired by railway signage, and the Putrella tray.

His democratic and pedagogical approach is clearly visible in projects such as the Proposal for a Self-Design of 1974, a manual inviting people to build their own furniture from simple wooden boards and nails, promoting a critical awareness of making. Even in the field of childhood, Mari left an indelible mark with works like the 16 Animals puzzle, where a single continuous cut in the wood generates different figures, combining play, art, and science. Awarded five Compassi d’Oro, including one for lifetime achievement in 2011, he maintained until his death in 2020 a fiercely critical stance toward consumerism and the banalization of the discipline, leaving as a legacy the idea that every object must, above all, be a manifesto of dignity and knowledge.
