Makkum earthenware comes from the Frisian village of Makkum and is among the best-known forms of Dutch ceramics. The tradition goes back to the 17th century, when potters settled here and began making utilitarian and decorative ware, often inspired by the popular Delft blue.
What makes Makkum special is that many pieces are still produced in an artisanal way. They are hand-shaped, hand-painted and glazed. The decorations range from classic blue-and-white motifs to colorful floral designs, as seen on your vase as well.
An important feature is the mark or stamp on the bottom, often with a crown and the name “Makkum.” This guarantees quality and craftsmanship. Through the combination of tradition, craftsmanship, and recognizable style, Makkum earthenware is beloved by collectors and decor enthusiasts.
Today this ancient craft is still continued, so each piece carries a small piece of Dutch history.
