AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1880, 19x24 cm.
"Mauresque au sofa", a very beautiful portrait from the late nineteenth century (Algeria), attributed to Jean Geiser.
Very beautiful period albumen print in very good condition, mounted on a cardboard backing.
Excellent preservation of contrasts, gray tones and levels of detail.

Jean Geiser (1848-1923) is one of the most important photographers of colonial Algeria in the late 19th century. Of Swiss origin, he settled in Algiers around 1873 and founded a photographic studio there that would quickly become one of the most renowned in North Africa. His work is part of the Orientalist photography tradition. He produced thousands of images for travelers, colonists and European collectors: views of cities, landscapes, street scenes, portraits of inhabitants and studio compositions featuring dancers, musicians or figures in “exotic” costume.

Will be shipped with its slipcase and neutral-pH cardboard backing (ideal for a collection in good condition).
