AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1880, 19x25 cm.
"Berbère", a very beautiful portrait from the late nineteenth century (Algeria), attributed to Jean Geiser.
A very beautiful albumen print from that era in very good condition, mounted on a cardboard backing.
Excellent preservation of contrasts, grayscale nuances and levels of detail.

Jean Geiser (1848-1923) is one of the most important photographers of colonial Algeria at the end of the 19th century. Of Swiss origin, he settled in Algiers around 1873 and founded a photographic studio that quickly became one of the most reputed in North Africa. His work is part of the orientalisted photography tradition. He produced thousands of images for travelers, colonists and European collectors: views of cities, landscapes, street scenes, portraits of inhabitants and studio compositions featuring dancers, musicians or figures in “exotic” costume.

Will be shipped with its case and its cardboard support on neutral pH (ideal for a collection in good condition).
