Description from the seller

Biedermeier Glass Carafe, Germany or Bohemia, ca. 1820–1840.

Carafe with stopper made of ruby glass, facet-cut; polygonal body with beveled edges, inset neck, and profiled shoulder and base. Circularly fine gold-mounted acanthus and floral ornamentation. 22 x 13 cm (carafe). Height including stopper 29.8 cm.

Original, ground glass stopper 12 x 6.5 cm with facet-cut construction and corresponding gold mounting.

Condition: Slight signs of age-related wear; gold mounting partially minimally rubbed. Overall good, original condition.

Glass production in Bohemia enjoyed a significant flowering in the early 19th century, especially during the Biedermeier, and was regarded throughout Europe as leading in both technical and artistic aspects. Characteristic are finely cut forms, brilliant color glasses—particularly the precious ruby glass—as well as decorative refinements such as gold mounting. Carafes of this type combine a representative function with artisanal precision and were favored adornments of the refined bourgeois interior.
