Viking Age, iron battle axe with a broad asymmetrical curved blade and a short socketed shaft.
Size:
± 16 x 15 cm
Condition:
Very good and solid example in a stable condition. The surface shows a deep brown oxidised patina throughout, with clear age-related corrosion and encrustation. The form remains well preserved. Great example of a Viking Age iron axe, rare in this well preserved condition.
-> Viking battle axes were among the most characteristic weapons of the Viking Age, roughly 8th to 11th century AD. They were valued for being effective, versatile and less costly to produce than swords, which made them accessible to a wide range of warriors, from ordinary fighters to wealthy elites.
In combat, Viking axes could be used both for powerful chopping blows and for hooking an opponent’s shield or limbs. Forms ranged from smaller practical axes that could serve as both tool and weapon, to larger dedicated war axes with broader blades and longer shafts. Some later examples developed into the famous broad-bladed or “Danish” axe, associated with elite warriors and formidable two-handed fighting.
