Description from the seller
Pair of polychrome wooden devotional sculptures in gilded and colored wood – Val Gardena/Tyrol area, late 19th – early 20th century
Description:
Elegant pair of sculptures depicting two male figures in a didactic attitude, plausibly evangelists or saints, each with a symbolic book. The figures are carved in wood, finely polychrome and with leaf gilding, following the craft tradition of the Alpine area (Val Gardena/Tyrol).
The statues show good workmanship, evident in the rendering of the faces, the animated drapery, and the iconographic details (books, hand gestures, symbolic elements at the feet). On the back they are carved, according to the typical technique of devotional sculptures for altars or niches.
The surface preserves a patina consistent with the age, with signs of wear and small abrasions to the gilding that attest to their authenticity and use over time.
Period:
Late 19th – first half of the 20th century
Origin:
Alpine area, probably Val Gardena (Northern Italy)
Materials:
Carved wood, polychromy and gilding
Conditions:
Good overall condition, with normal signs of aging. Small losses and superficial wear to the polychromy and gilding present, compatible with age and use. Structurally stable.
Dimensions:
Height 31 cm
Base about 16x13 cm
Note:
Objects of strong decorative and collecting impact, ideal for classic interiors or for collections of Alpine sacred art.
