French silver-plated metal epergne in Napoleonic III style, dated 1850–1900, weighing 1068 g with dimensions 28 × 14 × 14 cm, featuring a central sculptural group of four hippocampi, in antique condition with wear and probable small missing parts.
Description from the seller
Refined French-made epergne dating from the second half of the nineteenth century, crafted in metal finely silver-plated. The item stands out for its extraordinary decorative richness and the sculptural quality of its figures, which recall the eclectic, scenographic taste typical of the period.
The structure is multi-tiered, with a square base adorned by a delicate openwork balustrade that gives visual lightness to the whole. At the four corners, curved feet support the composition with elegance.
The central, highly striking element is the sculptural group composed of four hippocamps, hybrid creatures with sinuous, scaly bodies, reminiscent of mythological horses or seahorses. Their tails coil gracefully upward, merging with the central stem of the candlestick. The heads, finely chiseled, display lively expressions and precise details, with manes in motion and mouths slightly open, seemingly animating the scene.
Above them rises the shaft, marked by an elegant vertical fluting and enriched by a central decorative element with a grotesque face, typical of nineteenth-century ornamental repertoire. This mascaron adds a theatrical and mysterious touch to the piece.
The upper part features a cup, perhaps a candle holder, supported by four decorative arms in the shape of winged creatures or stylized dragons, extending outward with great dynamism. The rim of the cup is finely worked with beaded motifs. The upper element is missing.
The surface shows a natural patina with fascinating iridescences, evidence of time and a guarantee of authenticity.
Shows light damage and small, barely visible cracks as highlighted in the photos.
