Description from the seller
Grand Altar Palm-Holder (Urn) - Carved and gilded wood - Sicily, Italy - First half of the 19th century
Description of the item
Refined altar urn (palm-holder) of Sicilian manufacture, dating to the first half of the 19th century (late Neoclassical/Empire period).
The piece, of notable size (40 cm in height), is made of finely carved wood, plastered, and finished with the technique of leaf gilding. The structure features a vase-shaped amphora body, enriched with elegant volute handles and acanthus-like mouldings at the base, typical of the architectural taste of the period. All of it rests on a solid square base (plinth) also gilded.
This type of furnishing was originally intended to adorn the steps of church altars or the chapels of the Sicilian aristocracy in central Sicily, serving as a support for blessed palms or floral arrangements.
