Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral Zoisite. Like the pink variety Thulit, it is used exclusively as a gemstone.
As Zoisite crystallizes, Tanzanite forms in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on their surfaces. Cleavage planes, by contrast, shimmer more pearly.
