Joueur de kora, an original 2019 acrylic painting on fixed-under-glass technique, 13 × 16 cm painting, framed to 16 × 21 cm, originating from Senegal, in the naïve art style, signed by Kale, in good condition, sold by owner or dealer.
Description from the seller
This work is a painting under glass, a technique widely used in West Africa, notably in Senegal, where it is known as “fixed under glass,” or “suwer.” The image is painted in reverse on the inner face of the glass, which requires great mastery, as the details are created before the color fields.
The subject represents a musician, probably a griot, an essential figure of the oral tradition responsible for transmitting the history and stories of the communities. The instrument evokes a kora or a traditional lute. The style is characteristic: simplified forms, bold outlines, vivid decorative colors. This type of work developed in the 20th century, blending local influences with sometimes popular or religious iconography. Highly valued by collectors, fixed-under-glass reflects both artisanal know-how and a living artistic expression, rooted in Senegalese culture.
