La gardienne des calebasses, an original 2019 acrylic under-glass painting from Senegal by Kale, hand-signed, in naïf style, 13 × 16 cm (image) and sold with a 16 × 21 cm frame, provenance from owner or dealer, good condition.
Description from the seller
This work is a painting on glass, a technique widely used in West Africa, notably in Senegal, where it is known as “fixé sous verre,” or “suwer.” The image is painted backwards on the inner surface of the glass, which requires great skill, as the details are created before the color blocks.
The woman depicted, through her jewelry, her proud bearing, and the gourds she holds, evokes cultural richness and traditions. She may symbolize femininity, generosity, and the essential role of women in daily life and the transmission of knowledge.
This work belongs to Senegalese popular art of the 20th century, at the crossroads of tradition and modernity.
