Ceremonial mask linked to the society of warriors and initiation rites.
The Salampasu are a people of warriors and hunters living east of the Kasai River. The masks represent the core of Salampasu art because there are very few ritual objects and statues. These masks feature a bulbous forehead from which a prominent triangular nose protrudes and a rectangular mouth that reveals an impressive dentition of teeth carved to a point. Weathered wood with a beautiful patina of use and pigment residues.
