Cerimonia Vudu', an original Haitian Naïve oil painting by Alix, 1980, depicting a nocturnal scene, 40 x 60 cm, in good condition, signed, original edition, provenance Haiti, frame included.
Description from the seller
This painting was purchased by my father during a family trip to Haiti in 1980. I was there too and I was 17 at the time.
It is a typical example of Haitian Naive art and it represents a ritual Voodoo dance.
During the trip we witnessed a Voodoo ceremony firsthand.
At the bottom there is also a white symbol near the feet; it is a Veve that is used to invoke the Loa, the spirits that act as intermediaries between humanity and the divine.
The author signs Alix, surely from the Port-au-Prince School. I cannot determine the author precisely since there are several authors from that period with the surname Alix.
The signature is clearly visible in the photo. The most probable author is Gabriel Alix (1930 – 1998).
The frame measures 74 cm by 54 cm, and is included as a courtesy and does not form part of the artwork. Any damage to the frame will not be a valid reason for claims or for cancelling the order.
