Description from the seller
"Finest Italian miniature – Madonna with Child – Gouache & Watercolor on Bone – probably Florence, early 19th century"
Italian miniature painting – Madonna with Child – Gouache and Watercolor on Bone – Florence, early 19th century
Up for offer is an extremely finely executed miniature depiction of the Madonna with the Christ Child, worked in gouache and watercolor on an organic support (bone/bone), typical for high-quality miniature works of the early 19th century.
The intimate and emotive composition shows Mary in an affectionate embrace with the Child – a classical motif of the Italian Renaissance, here interpreted in the tradition of Florentine models. The soft transitions, delicate color palette, and subtle modeling of the faces bear witness to great craftsmanship and artistic sensibility.
The execution stylistically recalls the Florentine school, known for its elegant miniatures that draw on Renaissance masters. Such works were often created for private devotion or as precious collectables for the upper middle class and the nobility.
The work is set in a decorative frame that further enhances the effect of the miniature and preserves the historical character.
An exceedingly appealing collector’s piece with high decorative quality – ideal for lovers of religious art, miniature painting, and Italian art tradition.
