Description from the seller
Sri Lankan Yak Beraya Ritual Drum, 20th Century
Traditional double-headed Sri Lankan percussion instrument, identified as a Yak Beraya, also known in regional use as a Ruhunu Beraya. This type of drum is associated with the southern coastal traditions of Sri Lanka and is used in ritual performance, ceremonial dance, and festival music.
Made in Sri Lanka.
Estimated date of manufacture: 20th century.
Cylindrical wooden body, traditionally associated with kithul wood construction, with stretched natural skin drumheads and cane or rattan-style tension lacing. Intended as a ceremonial and performance drum, and also suitable as an ethnographic display object or interior statement piece.
Condition shows age and use. The body remains visually strong, with surface wear, abrasions, and handling marks. The lacing and hanging cord show wear. One rim area shows visible loss and deterioration to the skin and edge material. Sold and shipped exactly in the condition shown, so the photographs should be examined carefully.
Its value lies in its direct connection to Sri Lankan ceremonial music culture, its hand-crafted construction, and its strong decorative presence. Traditional percussion instruments of this type are collected both as musical objects and as regional ethnographic pieces.
