Two wooden nightstands in Louis XVI neoclassical style from France, dating to circa 1940–1950, each 73 cm high, 65 cm wide, 30 cm deep, in good used condition with small signs of wear and imperfections.
Description from the seller
They are two nightstands that fit immediately into that reinterpreted neoclassical language which, in the first half of the 20th century, revives the vocabulary of Louis XVI with a blend of fidelity and freedom. The structure is compact, very French in its proportion: a straight body with clean lines, resting on a minimal plinth and crowned by a small molded top that introduces the only openly ornamental gesture. That finish, with its softly curved floral motif, almost functions as a romantic quotation from the eighteenth-century repertoire, but executed with a firmer hand and slightly thicker touch typical of the interwar period.
The wood, in a warm reddish hue, is polished to a shine that reveals careful production but not aristocratic: a bourgeois piece of furniture, solid, designed to endure and to accompany interiors seeking elegance without excess. The front is organized with the typical clarity of the style: a clearly defined top drawer, with a metallic pull in the shape of a ring or tear, and beneath it a pair of symmetrical doors that repeat the same hardware language. Geometry dominates, yet always softened by classical proportion and by the presence of that crown molding that provides verticality and a touch of grace.
The ensemble conveys that characteristic mix of 20th-century neoclassicism: respect for symmetry, a taste for restrained ornament, and a workmanship that combines traditional crafts with the more standardized methods of its era. They are pieces not meant to dazzle, but to offer serenity, order, and an air of refined historical continuity within a bedroom.
