Description from the seller
Elegant solid walnut dressing mirror, psyché, crafted with skilled artisanal workmanship in the first half of the nineteenth century, presumably in Northern Italy. The piece features all the typical characteristics of Italian cabinet-making from the transitional period between the Carlo X style and the Biedermeier: clean lines, scroll-shaped profiles, absence of superfluous decorations, and maximum emphasis on the natural grain of the wood.
The oval frame that houses the original mirror is made with solid-section construction and a rounded edge, and it is tilt-adjustable thanks to two delicately carved scrolling side supports, ending in curling heads. The original mirror, though with the natural veil of age, is perfectly intact and functional.
The base consists of a shaped top with a double-curve profile (the period’s typical "violin" or "wavering" form), supported by a frame with a front drawer equipped with the original round knob in bruno-bronze brass. The drawer moves smoothly and is internally lined with raw wood, as was customary in the cabinetry of the era. The sides of the base feature vertical fluted moldings, another stylistic element of the Carlo X period.
The walnut grain is extraordinarily rich, warm, and uniform, with acajou-like reflections typical of Italian walnut treated with shellac. The patina is authentic, naturally aged over time.
The back of the mirror shows the original structure with hand-forged iron nails, an unmistakable sign of pre-industrial craftsmanship before 1860.
This type of dressing mirror, produced in small cabinet-making workshops in Northern Italy between 1830 and 1860, is today increasingly difficult to find in such intact condition. The presence of the original drawer with brass knob, the entirely solid walnut construction, the handmade nails on the back, and the richness of the grain make it an authentic piece sought after by collectors of Italian historical furniture.
