Set of seven ceramic beer mugs, six small and one large, all glazed and hand-painted, in vintage Nordic design, made in Japan for the West German market, with the large mug about 23 cm high and the small ones about 11.5 cm high, in new condition.
Description from the seller
Interesting complete set of "beer steins": 6 small steins, plus one large tankard, all with the same decorative quality, coming from Japan for the West Germany market.
This set of 6 handcrafted ceramic stoneware steins, relief-worked and hand-painted, depicts a forest with wild animals, deer and wild boars; the dominant figure is the fox, well represented by the handles.
The peculiarity is that under the large pour tankard, recognizable by its pouring spout, the mark JAPAN is engraved on the bottom. The label "Japan" or "Made in Japan" on the bottom of a ceramic beer mug indicates the object was produced in Japan for the export market, usually between 1921 and 1941 or in the postwar period (from the 1950s onward), as our products in 1970/1980.
Although the beer mug (or stein) is a traditional European form, particularly German, Japanese manufactories produced large quantities of these items imitating Western styles to meet international demand.
Electric Style: Many Japanese mugs imitate the German style (tavern scenes, reliefs, animals, metal lids) but with ceramic craftsmanship typical of the Arita, Kutani or Satsuma districts.
The decoration is important, making it a quality collectible piece. Relief ceramic with very vivid glaze-fired enamel decorations representing a forest with animals, the same decor for both the pouring stein and the drinking steins.
