Description from the seller
Very stylish vintage wine rack. The wine rack probably dates from the 1950s, '60s or '70s, and was made by the company Tomado. It is a sleek, simple wine rack that holds 30 bottles. The rack was designed by the owners of Tomado, the Van der Togt brothers. It is made of plastified wire.
The company Tomado (van der Togt MAssa productie DOrdrecht) still exists and makes a wide range of objects. It is a Dutch company founded in 1923 by the Van der Togt brothers in Dordrecht.
What began in 1923 with the production of wallpaper hooks developed into an extensive collection of household items made from tin-plated steel wire; coasters, strainers and potato mashers.
In the early 1950s the wire articles were plastified, including wine racks, drying racks and draining racks, and in 1958 the iconic Tomado book rack was released, which now has a place in the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Of course the plastification was done to protect the metal, but also to cover it quickly and beautifully. Because the plastic lies on the metal like a thick layer of paint, the rack gains a very beautiful gloss and also feels a bit softer to the touch than metal; very nice!
This rack shows logical signs of use (see photos), but is still 100% stable and in very good condition. It is a particularly functional ornament in any interior, and of course a conversation piece.
The wine rack will be carefully packed and insured for shipping.
