Kyanite, also called Cyanite, Disthen or Sapparite, is a mineral from the class of minerals known as “silicates and germanates.” It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with the chemical composition Al2[O|SiO4], so chemically speaking it is an aluminum silicate. Structurally it belongs to the inosilicates.
Kyanite predominantly forms prismatic to tabular crystals with a glassy luster on the surfaces, but can also occur in fibrous or granular to massive mineral aggregates. In its pure form, kyanite is colorless and transparent. Due to multiple light refractions caused by lattice defects or polycrystalline structure, it can appear white and, with trace impurities, take on light to dark blue, blue-violet, greenish to brownish, and rarely reddish colors, with transparency accordingly decreasing.
