Description from the seller
Eileen Gray
Monograph edited by Penelope Rowlands
This agile design portfolio dedicated to Eileen Gray celebrates the life and the varied work of this pioneer of modernism, whose projects remain fresh and bold as when she conceived them for the first time. Gray's passion for design began in 1905, when the young artist stumbled upon a lacquer repair shop in the London district of Soho. She soon became a master of this ancient and exacting art. In Paris, high society would visit her shop, Jean Désert, to buy her luxurious screens and lacquered furniture and the carpets inspired by the De Stijl movement. Desiring to explore new frontiers of design, at forty-six she turned to architecture, creating in the following years two revolutionary houses, E.1027 and Tempe à Pailla, furnished with her tubular metal furniture, at the time surprisingly innovative and today iconic. Progressive in her vision, with an alchemical talent for materials, Eileen Gray holds a place of honor in the pantheon of great modernist designers.
Rowlands P.; Eileen Gray. Compact Design Portfolio. Hardcover, dust jacket, 15 x 15.5 cm, 96 pages, English language; San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 2002.
The volume presents in overall excellent condition. Dust jacket intact. Cover well preserved. Binding perfectly solid. Interior pages clean without stains. An excellent collectible copy.
