Description
This powerful horned mask, originating from the Grasslands region of Cameroon (Bamileke or Bamun cultures), is a piece of rare intensity. Carved with the vigor characteristic of Cameroonian art, it features bold volumes and a haunting expression. The surface of the object is covered with a rich, crusty sacrificial patina, punctuated by kaolin residues, bearing witness to its use during significant ritual ceremonies. The detailed scarification work and the arch of the horns give the work an imposing sculptural dimension. It is a prestigious object that embodies the strength and social hierarchy specific to the chiefdoms of Western Cameroon.
