Description from the seller
Description
A Rare Piece of Victorian/Edwardian Kitchenalia.
Up for auction is a beautifully preserved, heavy silver-plated food warming dish (bain-marie plate) manufactured by the renowned London ironmongers and metalworkers, Aland & Co. Located on Lambeth Road, Aland & Co. was synonymous with high-quality metalware during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Design & Layout
This plate features a classic three-compartment configuration:
One large primary section for main courses.
Two smaller sections for side dishes or vegetables.
The hollow base acts as a reservoir for hot water, designed to keep meals at a consistent temperature—a high-end luxury for nurseries, hospitals, or formal dining rooms of the era.
Markings & Authenticity
The reverse side is clearly stamped with the maker's mark and production codes:
"ALAND & Co": The prestigious London manufacturer.
"24": Indicating the inside diameter in centimeters (24 cm).
"16": The original pattern/model number.
Condition Report
Complete: Extremely rare to find with the original screw-cap still present and intact.
Plating: Excellent silver-plating with a bright finish. Minimal "bleeding" of the base metal, consistent with age and careful use.
Structural: No major dents or deep scratches. The reservoir remains solid.
Dimensions:
Inner Diameter: 24 cm
Weight: Substantial (Heavy gauge metal)
Collector's Note:
Finding these pieces with the original cap is becoming increasingly difficult. This is a "cabinet-ready" example for collectors of silver-plate, hotelware, or Victorian domestic history.
