Description from the seller
Art Deco vase in enameled faience, model No. 1816, Western Europe, circa 1925–1935. This piece presents a resolutely modernist aesthetic, characterized by a bold geometric construction and a particularly nuanced glaze. It fully aligns with the decorative renewal of the interwar period, where the simplification of forms and the exploration of textures take precedence over figurative ornamentation.
The vase adopts a highly legible octagonal structure, resting on a broader base with slightly concave facets. The body rises in clear facets up to a pronounced shoulder, forming an angular break that rhythmically shapes the silhouette. The neck, tightened then flared, repeats this play of cut facets and ends with a softened rim. The glaze, applied in vertical runs, develops a flame-like décor in rich and deep tones: caramel brown predominates, enriched by coppery reflections, olive green nuances, and darker areas almost blacked in the lower part. Fine natural crazing runs across the surface, accentuating the depth of the glaze and bearing witness to the firing process. The interior, treated in darker tones, also shows characteristic firing effects. The base bears the inscription “1816”, corresponding to the model number.
The vase is in excellent condition. The glaze retains a handsome freshness and good uniformity, with only slight irregularities inherent to manufacturing and firing, perfectly normal for this type of production. One area shows deep horizontal dark traces in the glaze.
This type of piece perfectly illustrates the directions taken by many European faience manufacturers in the 1920s–1930s, where decorative ceramics evolved toward more architectural forms and experimental glazes, often flame- or reactive. This search for a balance between formal rigor and the spontaneity of the décor is emblematic of Art Deco. In view of its technical and stylistic characteristics, this production could be linked to certain models made in the north of France, notably in the circle of Gustave De Bruyn Faience.
