Description from the seller
Set of 12 Art Deco silvered metal knife rests, presented in its original box, European workmanship circa 1930–1940. This place setting perfectly illustrates the functional elegance of the interwar period, where the sobriety of lines fuses with a measured decorative pursuit. The presence of its original case, bearing the address of a Liège shop, adds authenticity and places the set in a refined distribution context.
Each knife rest consists of a cylindrical stem connecting two strictly trilobed supports, with soft and regular contours. These ends, solid and slightly bulged, evoke a discreet organic stylization characteristic of the Art Deco vocabulary. The silvered metal surface, finely polished, offers a beautiful satin sheen. The set is housed in its original rectangular box, covered with brown faux leather with a reptile pattern. The interior, lined with pink satin fabric, is completed by a printed ribbon bearing “Maison Janssens, 28 rue du Pont d’Avroy, Liège,” an address located on one of the city’s major commercial arteries, known for shops specializing in tableware and quality objects.
The set is in very good condition. The twelve pieces are complete and display a nice uniformity, with slight signs of use consistent with age. Only one knife rest has undergone a prior solder repair, solid and discreet in use. The case shows exterior wear (scuffing and small losses); the locking components are missing, while the interior remains clean and well preserved.
The pieces bear the single mark “19,” which does not correspond to a silver title but to a fineness index used for silvering. In this system, the number indicates the amount of fine silver used to plate a reference set (and not per piece individually). A mark “19” thus indicates real but relatively thin silvering, typical of productions intended for careful everyday use. This type of hallmark, common in European 20th-century production, must be distinguished from marks for solid silver and is a technical indication of the quality of the silver deposit.
