Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals discovered in exposed dolomite outcrops in and around Herkimer County, New York, and the Mohawk River Valley in the USA.
They are not diamonds; the name "diamond" owes to their clarity and well-formed facets.
Since the first occurrences were in the village of Middleville or in the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also referred to as Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond.

Herkimer diamonds gained wide fame after workers discovered them in large quantities while mining dolomite in the Mohawk River Valley in the late 18th century.
Geologists discovered exposed dolomite in the outcrops of Herkimer County and began mining there, which led to the designation "Herkimer Diamond."
Double-terminated quartz crystals are found worldwide.
