Description from the seller
Bronze candlestick holder – Saint Christopher bearing the Baby Jesus – Flanders, 19th century
Rare bronze candlestick figurine depicting Saint Christopher carrying the Baby Jesus on his shoulder. The saint is shown walking, eyes closed, holding the staff (now partially incomplete at the upper end) which finished with a cup designed to receive the candle. The Child, blessing, rests on the saint’s left shoulder. The whole rests on a wide circular base with a strong lip.
This typology belongs to a well-defined corpus, derived from the Mannleinleuchter produced from the end of the 15th century in the Old Netherlands. These are the “candle holders with a figure” where the figure serves as the central shaft.
An identical specimen, dated around 1600–1630, is kept at Stoneacre (Kent, Great Britain), inv. NT 863878, confirming the formal lineage of this model with early Nordic productions.
Solid cast, beautiful old brown-golden patina with consistent wear and oxidation.
Old loss at the upper cup. Signs of use inside the bobeche and on the plate, in keeping with its function.
Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
