Description from the seller
Ancient Nkoh mask from the Kungan society. Ethnicity: Bamileke (Cameroon).
The eyes are half-closed by rodent teeth (one of which is broken).
Another tooth is present in the lower jaw.
Beautiful dark patina.
The Kungan society is a society that is at once religious, magical and warlike in certain Bamileke chiefdoms. This confraternity celebrates the cult of the Supreme Being but also that of the deities. It must also combat evil sorcerers and, as a result, uses a very rich array of ritual material.
The Kungan plays an important role in agricultural cults and also fights against sorcery and vampirism (J. P. Notué and L. Perrois (1984).
