Cache-sexe, a Kirdi bead apron from Cameroon, 14 × 14 cm, in good condition, provenance Ex Martial Bronsin.
Description from the seller
This superb Kirdi sex-sewn apron, from northern Cameroon, is an object that is at once utilitarian and symbolic. Made with multicolored beads meticulously assembled, it testifies to a remarkable artisanal know-how. The geometric motifs, arranged in horizontal bands, alternate bright colors and harmonious contrasts, conveying a confident aesthetic sense as well as a codified visual language.
Traditionally worn by women, this type of adornment is not limited to a clothing function. It contributes to the cultural and social identity of the wearer. The colors, the motifs, and the quality of the workmanship can indicate age, status, or membership in a specific group. The bead fringes extending the main part add movement to the object, animating the silhouette during movement or dances.
Beyond daily or ceremonial use, this apron fits into a broader set of aesthetic practices where the body becomes a medium of expression. It reflects the importance given to ornamentation and the transmission of traditions within Kirdi societies, where each object carries a dimension that is practical, social, and symbolic.
