The Ceiling of the Paris Opéra – Marc Chagall

Beautiful large octavo (33.5 × 25 cm), bound in red cloth with card cover, featuring a stunning print of an oil study by Marc Chagall (1887-1985).
An additional protective plastic cover is also in excellent condition.
The original lithograph by Chagall is bound separately at the front of the book. (photo 1)
The copy is complete with six lithographs by the Mourlot Brothers;
The black-and-white photos are by Izis.
The whole volume comprises 89 pages and opens with a tribute to Charles Garnier, followed by Louis Aragon's poem Madrigal pour un plafond.
An important foreword by Jacques Lassaigne then outlines the background of the commission placed by André Malraux in 1964, as well as the artistic choices Marc Chagall made.
The work then presents the sketches and preliminary maquettes, before culminating in the detailed description of the final execution of the ceiling of the Opéra de Paris, illustrated by splendid overview images and detailed color plates.
It closes with an explanation of the technical conditions for realizing this monumental work (220 m²), the text of a speech by Marc Chagall, an overview of the plates, and a proof copy.
Separately folded in a folder you will find a fold-out ceiling model, in black and in color, in its final version. Also in excellent condition. Signed by Chagall at the bottom right.
