Description from the seller
Antique German Family Photo Album – ca. 1890 – Cabinet Card Portrait Album with presumed Silver Mounts
A charming and authentic late 19th-century German family photo album dating to approximately 1890, containing 10 thick album pages filled with original portrait photographs of family members across several generations.
This beautiful Victorian-era German photograph album features a richly textured brown cloth binding with decorative clasp and elegant ornamental front mount in presumed silver, giving the piece a refined and distinguished appearance. The silver-toned metal fittings, including the clasp and front cartouche, enhance the luxurious character typical of higher-quality personal albums from the Wilhelmine period.
The portraits include men, women, children, and military portraits, offering a remarkable historical glimpse into bourgeois German family life of the late 19th century. Several photographs are original studio portraits with visible photographer imprints from German cities such as Siegburg and Krefeld, adding provenance and authenticity.
Albums of this type were often cherished family heirlooms, preserving multiple generations in an era when portrait photography was both prestigious and personal. The cabinet card and carte-de-visite style photographs remain highly sought after by collectors of antique photography, genealogy, militaria, and German historical memorabilia.
The album itself is a true period object, fully original and unrestored, with beautiful natural patina throughout. The clasp remains functional, and the interior retains its original gilt decorative borders around the photo mounts.
A highly atmospheric collector’s piece and a true eye-catcher for any antique photography collection, Wunderkammer display, or historical interior.
Dimensions: 14 x 10.5 x approx. 4 cm (h x w x d)
Weight: approx. 650 g
Condition: Good antique condition with visible signs of age and use consistent with more than 130 years of history. Some wear to the cloth binding, age toning to the pages, and minor fading to several photographs. The presumed silver fittings show attractive age-related patina. The clasp remains present and functional. Untouched original condition.
Carefully packed and shipped insured.
