Description from the seller

Large Sancai Glazed Terracotta Figure of a Court Attendant – China, Ming Dynasty

A fine and characterful Chinese lead-glazed terracotta figure (Mingqi) dating from the Ming Dynasty. This statue depicts a standing court attendant or dignitary, modeled with great attention to the traditional attire of the period.Iconography: The figure is shown standing atop a high hexagonal pedestal base. He wears long, flowing official robes with heavy sleeves, classically glazed in the Sancai (three-color) palette, dominated here by deep forest green and warm amber/ochre tones. The hands are held together at the waist in a formal gesture of respect.Detailed Features: The face is delicately modeled with a serene, dignified expression and is surmounted by a distinct formal court hat. Notably, the head and cap remain unglazed, showing traces of the original white slip and pigment, a common feature in Ming burial pottery to allow for finer facial detailing.Historical Context: These figures were commissioned for the tombs of high-ranking individuals to serve and accompany the deceased in the afterlife, serving as a lasting symbol of the owner's status and wealth during the Ming era.
