Description from the seller
In this lot, a large Basilosaurus sp. rooted tooth is offered, 'massive.' Following the curvature and as is usually done in biological measurements, the complete piece measures 16.7 cm. 'It's impressive to hold it in your hands.' Great conservation, natural enamel shine, very pleasant; it is a tooth of the highest quality. It comes from the Ad-Dakhla Basin, Oued Ed-Dahab Province (southwest Morocco), where remains of Basilosaurids from the Paleogene period, Eocene epoch, Bartonian-Priabonian ages have been reported. In this area there is a very important paleontological site due to its richness of archaeocete whale remains from the middle to late Eocene. Basilosaurus was a primitive whale, a large predator of the seas about 40 million years ago, it maintained a unique dentition similar to that of its ancestors, terrestrial carnivorous mammals, with canines and molars with highly developed denticles; no modern whale possesses this type of teeth.
