Wooden frame, hand-carved and gold-plated, in antique Rococo style, dating to circa the early 1900s, external 63 × 53 cm (internal 44 × 34 cm), origin Italy, in good used condition with minor signs of age and stains.
Description from the seller
Hand-carved and hand-gilded wooden frame.
Motifs of Shell (Rocaille): The curved, overlapping carvings you see are typical of the Rococo style (or Italian Barocchetto). This organic design, reminiscent of a shell or a wave, was very popular in the eighteenth century and has had several “returns” in the nineteenth century.
Chasing/Repoussé Work: The depth of the carving suggests good craftsmanship. The visible wood grain beneath the gilding indicates that it is solid carved wood, not cast plaster (which would be smoother and more uniform).
Finitura "Bolo": In areas where the gold is slightly worn, a reddish/brown tone is noticeable. This is Armenian bole, a clay applied as a base for leaf gilding. Its presence is often a sign of traditional artisanal gilding.
State of Preservation
Patina of time: The frame shows signs of authentic aging, with small scratches and wear on the reliefs that give it character.
From its shapes and technique, it could be a frame from the late 19th/early 20th century, echoing 18th-century motifs.
Dimensions: 63 x 53 cm
