Edison GEM phonograph, model GEM - 1900, manufactured in 1900, in very good condition, tested and operating, with the original case.
Description from the seller
EDISON GEM PHONOGRAPH (CA. 1900–1902) – THE LITTLE MARVEL OF THE TURN OF THE CENTURY
A phonograph that looks as if it came straight from the dawn of the 20th century: compact, elegant, with that essential mechanical that made Edison’s production famous. The Gem model, introduced in 1899, was born as a “portable” and affordable phonograph, but today it is regarded as one of the most fascinating icons of the early sound era.
This exemplar – datable to the very early years of the series (ca. 1900–1902) – is equipped with its original case, a rare and precious detail that completes the object and increases its collecting value.
Aesthetically it is a small jewel:
black lacquered base, GEM in gold letters perfectly legible, the Thomas A. Edison trademark crisp, clean and well-proportioned mechanics, a metallic horn that gives stage presence without burdening the silhouette. The decals are splendidly preserved, a feature not common in Gem models from this era.
Functionally, the phonograph is operable. The motor turns regularly and has been tested with a cylinder (not included): the phonograph produces sound, but the quality is naturally limited and consistent with a device approaching 130 years of age.
To preserve its mechanical integrity, prolonged use is not recommended: it is a collectible to be kept with care, not used as a daily player.
An Edison Gem so complete, intact, and beautifully preserved is increasingly rare and hard to find: an authentic fragment of the history of sound, still able to tell its time.
Technical specifications:
• Brand: Edison
• Model: GEM
• Country of manufacture: United States
• Year of construction: 1900-1902
• Type of cylinders: 2-minute cylinders
• Case dimensions (LxWxH): 24.5 x 19 x 18 cm
⸻
Informative note:
When the wooden case is closed, the lid presses on the start lever, preventing the phonograph motor from staying in its off position.
The motor spring must be wound gently, by turning the key counterclockwise, as provided by the original design.
Being a device made several decades ago, it does not meet today’s safety standards required for products newly introduced to the market.
We invite you to carefully view the description and images, which are an integral part of the listing.
