Description from the seller

Antique Chinese Cedar Buffet Cabinet (Baimu)

This refined, two-piece cabinet is a classic example of Chinese cabinetmaking from the early 20th century (circa 1900-1920), executed in Chinese Cedarwood (Baimu or Nanmu). The furniture comes from the estate of a specialized antiques dealer, underscoring careful selection and authentic details.

Features & Details
• Material: Fully made of solid Cedarwood. This wood is highly valued in Chinese furniture for its fine grain, durability, and natural insect-repellent properties.
• Construction: * Two-part: consists of a lower cabinet with two drawers and two doors, and an upper cabinet with glass panels and gilded carving.
• Joints: Hand-cut, hand-pegged dovetail joints in the drawers.
• Decoration: * Rich gilded and openwork carving around the vitrine panels.
• The apron (lower edge) is decorated with stylized Fenghuang (Chinese phoenixes), symbols of luck and prosperity.
• Classic "oxblood" red lacquer accents on the interior and contrasting dark lacquer on the exterior.

• Dimensions:
• Total: 134 cm (H) x 57.5 cm (W) x 32 cm (D).
• Lower cabinet: 64 cm high / Upper cabinet: 70 cm high.

Historical Context
This type of cabinet was often produced in the Zhejiang (Ningbo) region. Due to its compact dimensions and vitrine construction, it was likely intended as a shrine cabinet or a display cabinet for precious items within a household of standing. The red interior suggests it may have been part of a dowry furniture set.
Note on condition: The cabinet shows a beautiful natural patina and light wear to the lacquer that is consistent with its age and authentic character of the piece.
We do not have a key.
The upper and lower sections with doors have a lock; the drawers do not have locks.

Shipping:
To provide the most accurate price, we ship this as 2 separate packages. They are packed very carefully and insured in transit. We use bubble wrap, foam, and cardboard.
