Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals found in exposed dolomite deposits in and around Herkimer County, New York, and in the Mohawk River Valley in the United States.
It is not about diamonds; the name 'Diamond' owes its origin to their clarity and well-formed facets.
Since the first finds occurred in the village of Middleville or in the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also called Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond.
Herkimer diamonds gained wide renown after workers discovered them in large quantities during the dolomite mining in the Mohawk River Valley in the late 18th century.
Geologists discovered exposed dolomite in the outcrops of Herkimer County and began mining there, which led to the name 'Herkimer Diamond'.
Double-terminated quartz crystals are found worldwide.
