Plate - Porcelain - NO RESERVE

A Chinese kraak porcelain plate from the Chongzhen period (1628–1644), Late Ming dynasty, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue.

The central medallion is freely painted with two seated scholars, rendered in a spontaneous and expressive style typical of the Chongzhen period. The cavetto is divided into four lightly molded panels (cartouches), decorated with alternating figural and floral motifs.

The reverse is largely undecorated, with only very light brushwork near the edges, consistent with wares from this transitional late Ming period. The plate shows characteristic kiln adhesions both on the rim and scattered across the surface, typical of kraak porcelain production.

An interesting feature is the presence of a drilled hole in the footrim, indicating that the plate was once intended for wall display, a common practice in Europe in the 17th–19th centuries.

Condition
One hairline is present. The plate shows multiple kiln adhesions and firing marks, typical for kraak porcelain. A drilled hole is present in the footrim for suspension. Light fritting to the rim. No restorations. Please refer carefully to the photographs for full details.
