Description from the seller
Memento Mori
Memory is what does not stop
"Even death breathes among ivy leaves"
Even death breathes among ivy leaves is not meant to be provocative.
We are used to thinking of death as an interruption. There is a before and an after. But ivy, with its vegetal stubbornness, with its slow and inexorable growth, introduces another reading; that of continuity.
Ivy advances, climbs, wraps. It does not destroy in the violent sense; it engulfs. It transforms surfaces into living memory. What it touches does not disappear, it is retained in a new form.
In this sense, death in the work is not a final point, but a porous threshold.
2 framed paintings, Vanitas with skull and ivy – gouache technique
depicting a skull partially enveloped by ivy.
The paintings are done on rigid support, with a tactile, layered texture that recalls ancient painting, though they are of recent creation.
The frames, in gilded wood, are salvaged (1950s) and present signs of time, small wear and authentic patina that contribute to the overall character of the work.
