Fang wooden mask from Gabon, provenance Antiekmarkt, dating to the mid-20th century (ca. 1920–1950), with carved forehead spear symbols and white kaolin pigment with blue specks, and measuring 34 cm high by 17.5 cm wide by 8.5 cm deep, in good aged condition and authenticated as a renovated original.
Description from the seller
A characteristic and powerful wooden mask from the Fang people of Gabon (Central Africa).
This type of mask is world-famous for its influence on modern art (e.g., Picasso) and was originally used by the secret Ngil brotherhood for spiritual judgment.
Style: Classic heart-shaped face with a tall, narrow nose and distinctive slit eyes.
Engravings: Featuring rare incised arrow symbols on the forehead, indicating spiritual protection and the pursuit of injustice.
Pigments: The mask is covered with a traditional layer of white kaolin (pipe clay), mixed with speckles of 'washing blue' (Reckitt's Blue). This European pigment was adopted by African artists from the early 20th century, which helps date the object.
Patina: The inside shows a deep, natural patina and clear signs of manual work from a chisel.
Condition: The mask is in good, well-worn condition befitting its age. Authentic signs of aging are visible, such as cracking from drying and old wormholes (treated for safety). The wear to the pigment layer confirms years of use and age.
Height: 34 cm x Width: 17.5 cm x Depth: 8.5 cm
Period: Mid 20th century (c. 1920-1950)
