Mortar - Teak - 20th century

Large ancient mortar with a pestle, handmade by hollowing out a tree trunk. These primitive tools were traditionally used to grind or crush various products such as rice, cereals, spices, or even coffee beans. The piece shown in the image features typical characteristics of folk or tribal art and is carved from a single solid piece of teak wood, with a side handle carved to facilitate transport; the pestle is visible inserted inside the central cavity. Often associated with the Wabi-Sabi style, which celebrates imperfection and the natural wear of time, similar objects can be found in diverse cultures, including Chinese provincial, African, and Native American.
