This pair of figures represents Chinese guardian lions, commonly known as Foo dogs (or Pho). Made in terracotta or turquoise-glazed stoneware, these objects were historically used as incense holders (or "joss stick holders") or candlesticks. The style recalls the Song, Yuan or Ming dynasties (from roughly the 12th to 17th centuries), although there are many later reproductions from the 19th and 20th centuries.
• Material: Glazed ceramic (often terracotta or stoneware) with the characteristic turquoise or teal glaze. In Chinese tradition, guardian lions are symbols of protection and power.
