Fr 17
Inner diameter: 18.1 mm
The opal is a mineral from the oxide and hydroxide class. As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and typically appears as a massive vein filling or nodular formed.
Opals are exclusively processed into jewelry stones.
The word opal was borrowed from Latin opalus or Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and probably goes back to upala from Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it was used to designate various rocks, while the early Hungarians called opal mines opálbánya nan.
Opals have long been regarded as particularly valuable gemstones, sometimes even more highly valued than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote about them: ‘[…] it has a fire of its own, finer than that in the carbunculus, it possesses the purplish spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald, and an utterly incredible play of light.’
