Black opals occur, just like their differently colored counterparts, as rounded to knobby masses with no detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the stone is cut. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which is intensified by a rainbow shimmer. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from silicon dioxide-rich fluids that crystallize in sediments or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
