AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Superb and rare Dan mask, called “fire mask” – Côte d’Ivoire / Liberia

Rare Dan typology, with a striking presence: a powerful face, carved in dense wood, entirely darkened by a deep patina, with this ochre-red origin band crossing the gaze like a sign of authority. The volumes are clear, the expression deliberately hard: strong nose, open mouth, red tongue still visible, and visible teeth — an expressive register uncommon among the Dan, which immediately evokes functions of control, intimidation and “putting in order” during masked performances.

The relief-engraved coiffure, the material polished by handling, and above all the beard in fibers/hair (preserved, which is rare) give the whole an extraordinary intensity. This type of mask, often associated with ritual interventions and a figure of power, stands out as much for its graphics as for its “incarnate” character: you can sense that it has lived.

A collectible piece, authentic and ancient, sought after for its atypical style, residual polychromy and sculptural strength.

Presentation of our expertise house:

Based in Belgium, our house of expertise and sale has supported collectors and families for years, with a simple approach: seriousness, transparency and service. We enjoy a solid reputation among tribal-art enthusiasts and are among the reference sellers on Catawiki, where we count among the oldest traders (over 8 years).

We have expertised and insured the liquidation and dispersal of dozens of family collections, and sold thousands of objects in partnership with individuals, notaries, estates, inheritances and collection cessations. Our track record speaks for itself: several hundred evaluations bordering 100% positive reviews, an indicator that outweighs any talk about our commitment and reliability.

Pieces that have passed through our hands are today in prestigious collections and, for some, have joined museum institutions — a pledge of the quality and consistency of our selection throughout the year. We regularly offer auctions with no reserve.

Express shipping: dispatch within 24 hours, insured, tracked and with extremely careful and secure packaging.

Contact 7 days a week: we respond quickly and remain at your disposal to advise you and document objects during sale.
