Masque Fang, a wooden Gabonese mask from the Fang people, dating to the late 20th century, with stand, H 45 cm x W 24 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Origin: Gabon
Tribe name: Fang
Material: Wood
Dimension: H 45 cm, L 24 cm
Shipping mode: Colissimo within 24-48h
open.
This decorative mask is a fascinating example of the Fang people's art, an ethnic group mainly located in Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. While Fang are often associated with the Ngil masks that are entirely white and elongated, this one features more complex and hybrid stylistic characteristics.
Unlike purely white masks, this one uses a tricolor partition (white, black, ochre-red):
The White (Kaolin): Represents the world of the ancestors, purity and clairvoyance.
The Black: Often linked to the earth, mystery or protection.
The Red: Symbolizes vital force, blood, or the passage between worlds.
This vertical division of the face suggests a duality (day and night, life and death), a recurring theme in Fang cosmology.
The Heart-Shaped Face: The brow ridges form two large curves that meet to outline the nose bridge, creating an inverted heart shape typical of Fang aesthetics and of some neighboring cultures (such as the Kota).
Eyes: The eyes are tubular and protruding (cylindrical). This is a powerful feature that gives the mask a fixed, almost hypnotic gaze, meant to intimidate or watch over community members.
Mouth: Very small and discreet, it reinforces the serene and inward expression, showing that the spirit does not need to speak to impose its authority.
The Headdress: The top of the skull is adorned with a row of nails, metal staples or small iron elements. These additions serve both decoration and symbolic charge, with metal often linked to power and protection against malevolent forces.
